About Me

My photo
Life is good, Love is hard, Hope is imminent,But life is good. The way I see it: The question is always 'What have you got to lose?' If the answer is nothing, you absolutely have to do it.

Tis the Season

So it's the holiday season and like everyone else on the globe I am swamped. Is that any excuse for me not to blog? Probably not but unfortunately that is the excuse I am going to go with.

So much to sum up in the last few weeks though. I love lists so here's the top 5 things you need to know about me in the past 30 days. I will name this list:

THE TOP 5 in 30:
5. I played a benefit show called "Meow for Music" as a fundraiser for The Cat's Cradle Shelter in Fargo. It was so much fun to share the stage with so many other local artists and great friends, including Mike Holtz of Carmen and the Cactus, Shane Maland and Little Winter!

4. My family didn't have turkey for 'Turkey Day.' I don't really like turkey and apparently no one else in my family does either.

3. I'm recording a song with a great friend and local artist. I am excited and nervous and I don't know which song to record. I will keep you posted...

2. The musical is coming along nicely and I am getting so attached to my characters. Want to know the lead character's names? Teaser: Johnny Ray and Violet Sullivan

1. Earlier in November one of my friends and local musician was injured in an accident. Natalie Lindberg of Fusion & Folk and myself teamed up to put on an Ugly Christmas Sweater party to raise some money to help with her medical bills and living expenses. We had wonderful evening with a photo booth, dancing, live music by some wonderfully talented local musicians and a of course, hundreds of Christmas cookies. It was a wonderful night and I'm so glad to live in such a warm, generous community.

There you have it. Next on the horizon for me? Recording and preparing for Celebration of Women and their music Feb. 18th 2012. Get excited! More to come on that later... but for now
MUCH LOVE MERRY CHRISMAS<3

Heart

This past Thursday I had the honor of being the musical entertainment at the North Dakota Heart Gallery Gala. The North Dakota Heart Gallery is a non-profit organization that reaches out to encourage adoption of children waiting for their forever homes.

Being an adopted child, this cause strikes a cord near and dear to me.

This is such an important and unique event in our community. This is the second year I have attended the event and I feel so blessed to have been asked back for another year.

There really isn't much more to explain but there is a lot to see. Take a look at this link for pictures and information...it will describe an emotion that I can't quite type...

Mucho love, all the time,

Rosie

Inspire Away

Sometimes I hit a wall with songwriting. When this happens, I turn to some greats for inspiration.

Although it's always helpful to listen to artists whom have influenced you and who people say, 'you know you kind of sound like_____' to me, it is equally as important to immerse yourself in any sort of listening, all different sorts. That way, not only are you looking for qualities and characteristics of songs that you can understand musically, but you're forced to think outside the box and listen to what qualities you might have in common with that artist. Maybe its your lyricism, themes, chords, key signatures, tempos, and on and on and on...and it lets your mind wander.

Here's what's currently on repeat on my itunes library... If you have any other suggestions, please leave them here: www.facebook.com/fargosrose

Mucho thanks!!!

New Song Update

New Song Update

Sometimes in the songwriting process you find yourself lucky when you find a hook, you know, a theme that resonates with you long after you've initially had the idea.

The trick in this is finding a way to create the pieces surrounding this hook to do it justice. Sometimes it takes an hour to figure out the song in full...but other times it takes a year.

In January 2010 I had one of those 'great hook' moments. And I loved it. It was one of those hooks that you hum in the shower and when you're in the candy isle at the grocery store. That kind of 'hook.'

But every time I took the time to sit down and write the rest of the song, I fell short. Can anything be more frustrating?

A month ago I sat down at the piano to practice a few songs I was playing at a show later that evening. Then, out of no where, I thought I would try to finish the untitled, unfinished, mystery song. And just like that, as if it were effortless, the melody came, then the lyrics and I performed that pieces mere hours later at the show.

And here it is, the finished product. After a year + of cocooning in my music notebook, it turned into a beautiful song :)

MUCH LOVE<3 Catch you in the flip side...
